Holy Cross parish is the only Catholic parish in Cyprus that can boast a church library. This library started when the Franciscans Fathers in Nicosia decided to discard holdings from their own Friary library that they deemed more suitable for a Parish library. This collection was later supplemented by numerous donations.
At this point two, and then three, volunteers started to organise the catalogue according to the international Dewey decimal classification. The Parish Library began to operate in 1999. It now holds more than 5500 books and journals.
The library collection includes a wide range of books on religious subjects: Bibles and biblical commentaries; theological and ecclesiastical literature of the Catholic (Latin and Maronite) and the Eastern Orthodox Churches; Catholic Church history, catechetics and papal documents; prayer and spirituality, liturgy and sacraments; religious periodicals, etc. It also has a fine collection of books on the Franciscan Order’s history and spirituality. Its non-religious holdings include books on the arts, philosophy, science, history, geography and travel (especially concerning Cyprus), works of literature, and other general interest books: language learning manuals and dictionaries, books on cookery, arts and crafts, sports, etc. There is also a children’s section with religious, fictional and non-fictional books. Most works are in English but many other languages are represented, in particular Greek, Italian, French, German and Spanish.
Purpose and Borrowing
The purpose of the Parish library is to support the spiritual development and the educational and recreational needs of Holy Cross parishioners, but it is also open to members of other Catholic parishes and more widely to the local community. Most materials can be borrowed, with the exception of some valuable books which are designated “For Reference Only” and must be consulted on the spot.
In order to borrow books, all you need to do is to first complete a borrower’s record form.
Everyone is welcome to come, browse and borrow, and sit in the library and read.
Official opening times:
- Sunday mornings after the 9.30 am mass;
- Thursday mornings (Call librarians to open the door);
- at other times by appointment.
The entrance to the Library is situated in the corridor behind the sacristy at the back of the Church.
Library Coffee Mornings
On the third Thursday of each month (except during July and August), a coffee morning is held in the Library. All parishioners are invited to attend, especially those who have just arrived in Nicosia and wish to meet other people.
We welcome volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering with us, or would like to learn more about the Holy Cross Parish Library, or if you have any questions, please contact the Librarians:
