February 2012 report

Our Parish Council (PC) met on 7 January 2012 in St. Francis Hall and considered the experiences of each of the members in our Parish. They each presented what they especially like, what they consider needs to be improved or introduced and what they would like to see included in the Annual Plan of the PC, to be implemented with the contribution of each of the members. The Executive Members of the PC undertook, based on these experiences, to present the PC at the next meeting a proposed Annual Plan. To this end we encourage each of you to actively participate also now, with your constructive suggestions and comments – they can be sent to the PC’s email address at holcrossparishcouncil@yahoo.com or placed in the Suggestions Box which is at the Church entrance. A Lenten Pilgrimage for all the Parish was agreed already to be organized on Saturday 24 March and the Lenten Penitential was confirmed to take place on Wednesday 7 March 2012. It was noted also that the 2012 Holy Cross Calendar which was published for the first time for our Parish was very well received and all copies sold out. Finally, everyone is encouraged to subscribe to the Parish Register now in order to benefit from it – it is free!

March 2012 report

The Parish Council met on 18 February 2012 and the proposed Annual Plan was briefly presented.  This includes: work on a website for the Holy Cross Parish; mission to the local Latin community; ways of encouraging support and cooperation between all the groups of our Parish; adult catechesis;

retreats and pilgrimages.  All these will be further discussed in due course.  The Lenten Penitential to take place on Wednesday 7 March at 6.30pm in the Church was discussed and each member of the Council will encourage the various groups to actively participate. For the Lenten Pilgrimage, after further discussion between the Executive Members of the Council and our priests, it was agreed that this will now be to Angeloktisti Church, in the Larnaca District, on Sunday 1 April 2012 – see separate column.

The Parish Council met on 17 March 2012 and the priorities for their Annual Plan were finalised. The top priorities include: the mission to the local Latin community; work for the implementation of a dedicated Holy Cross Parish website, the promotion of mutual support and unity between all the groups of our Parish; and the introduction of a special feast day for the migrant workers focusing on them (in addition to the feast of St Joseph the migrant which is also shared by others). The Lenten Pilgrimage for all the Parish taking place on Sunday 1 April 2012, to Angeloktisti Church, in the Larnaca District, was discussed, all the arrangements and the bookings made. Regarding the Holy Cross Parish website, the Executive Members of the Parish Council had met with Fr Evencio to discuss the matter. The goal is for the website to be live as soon as possible (after the set-up, training and basic input needed) and for it to be continuously enriched and updated by all the members of the Parish Council. The mission to the local Latin community was also discussed. This will begin with an invitation to all the local Latins to an initial meeting at Holy Cross on Tuesday 24 April 2012 at 7pm.

May 2012 report

XPICTOC ANECTH to everyone! The Parish Council met on 28 April 2012. Various items were discussed and decided upon, including the mission to the local Latin community, the Holy Cross Parish website, the new cemetery, the Parish Register and the mutual support and unity among the various groups of the parish, as well as the provision of First Aid in emergencies in the Church. For the local Latin community, after the meeting on 24 April, there will be monthly meetings, an excursion every three months, as well as a mission with home visits. The Holy Cross Parish website will go ahead as an independent website, with a user friendly framework, with the support of local expertise. For the new cemetery (an area of 4.000 m² near Tseri) it was decided that a team will be formed from various groups of the parish to, as a first step, care for it, plant trees etc. Regarding the Parish Register, the forms already completed (about 200), need to be processed for those registered to be served well. It was also decided that a meeting will be arranged with the various group leaders of the parish, to strengthen the unity and mutual support we need to have between us. It was also decided that the First Aid box will be transferred to a prominent place and for a list numbers with doctors/nurses to be posted in the Church. The meeting ended as always, with prayers for our Parish and its people. May the Risen Lord always fill us with His light!

Summer 2012 Report

Greetings to everyone and the Peace of Christ risen from the dead! The Parish Council met on Saturday 19 May 2012 and began with a Gospel reading at random and prayers. The Holy Cross Parish website was the main item on the agenda, After a short introduction and a presentation of some websites of other Catholic parishes, the Parish Council members considered in small groups various issues: what should be included on our own website, what should be on the main/front page, how it would be used and what contribution each of the members would make to assist in the creation and regular /update of the website. Each group then made a short presentation of their ideas/proposals and it was agreed that they would form the basis for the design/content of our parish’s website. It was also decided that a team with the Executive members would meet together to finalise the initial design in order to then proceed with its creation. The Parish Council also discussed briefly the formation of a team for the care of the new cemetery; three volunteers came forward and some more are expected soon from various groups. It was also noted that the mission to the local Latin community with home visits would begin as soon as the relevant details are available. Finally, in response to a comment in the Suggestions’ Box, it was decided that, for clearer communication, the weekly church announcements would also be posted on the notice board, at the entrance of the church. The Parish Council meeting concluded with prayers for our Parish and its people. May the Holy Spirit fill each one of us with His abundant gifts always! Have a wonderful summer!

September 2012 report

Greetings to everyone – we hope you had a wonderful summer, that you have enjoyed this special season to the greatest degree possible for you, whether you could go away for a vacation or not. As autumn begins, we hope we are all ready to begin anew, refreshed, with batteries recharged, full of energy and full of the Spirit of the Lord!

Following the June meeting, over the months of July and August the Parish Council did not hold its regular monthly meetings, but its members continued to work on the Holy Cross Parish Website to be launched soon, this autumn. Texts were drafted, photographs were chosen, meetings of the Executive members were held to monitor development, the design of the website and decide on further action, contacts were made with various parties, emails were exchanged and reviews were made etc. All this with a view to progress in order to launch this autumn, as planned, the Holy Cross Parish Website, which was among the top priorities of the Parish Council’s Annual Plan.

There is still some work to do and we hope to be able to announce soon the date our parish’s website will become live for everyone to begin to enjoy. In its September meeting the Parish Council will also review the progress of all items of its Annual Plan and decide on the action to be taken in order to progress further to satisfy the targets set. More information about this will be given in next month’s parish newsletter and on our website when launched.

As we begin anew, we humbly ask for your prayers before the Lord for our Church, for our priests, for our parish and for each one of us on the Parish Council so that the Lord grants us His Spirit and strength to work for His people with zeal, love, faith and dedication always. May God bless you abundantly!
