Christianity was introduced to India by Thomas the Apostle, who visited Muziris in Kerala in 52 AD to spread the gospel. Christianity is India’s third-largest religion. St. Alphonsa was the first Indian woman to be canonized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, while St. Gonsalo Garcia was the first Roman Catholic Saint from India. St. Francis Xavier visited India to preach the gospel. His body is now in the Basilica of Born Jesus in Goa, where it was placed in a glass container encased in a silver casket on 2 December 1637.

Most of the Catholic Indians in Cyprus are migrant workers. We take part in all activities in the church. We are one family. Once a year we invite a priest from India. We have retreats, counselling, confessions, and holy mass in our own language. We celebrate the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a grand celebration of Indian culture and tradition. We celebrate Indian independence on 15 August with Holy Mass and we raise our flag outside the church. We organise cultural programs and the way we live in Cyprus is very different to the way we live in India.
