St Anthony’s Benevolent Society

St Anthony’s Benevolent Society

St Anthony’s Benevolent Society was founded in 1927 and was the first such charitable organisation in Cyprus. Its aim is to give financial help to people in need (usually in the Nicosia area), regardless of their religion or nationality. Currently 10 to 12 families or elderly people receive regular financial help, while others receive assistance as and when required. From time to time families and individuals are assessed, so that we can be sure that the money goes where it is really needed.

Funds are raised through bazaars held monthly in the Holy Cross Church garden or St Francis Hall, at which new or nearly new clothes and toys are sold. Special bazaars are held at Christmas, and on St Anthony’s Day (13 June), when a lottery also takes place.

On St Anthony’s Day there is a High Mass and reception in Holy Cross Church garden.

Presently there are around 12 committee members, who meet formally four times a year.

Fr. Vito G Scagliuso is our Spiritual Assistant.
